The Styles
There are two major styles of perforated-paper cutting; the flat style and the layered style.
| In the flat style, patterns are cut from a single sheet of paper and the effect is very airy. |
 |
 |
Though any pattern can be used, the best designs are open and light - when there is so little paper remaining that you can't tell that it's paper. |
| In the layered style, simpler patterns are cut out independently, then glued on top of each other for a pyramid effect.
Each layer is one row smaller than the previous one. In this technique the best patterns have deep
dimension and look like they were carved. |
 |
The ladies' magazines of the 1870's showed that the flat pieces were more common for cross patterns, and the layered technique was often used to embellish boxes.
