The BackgroundIn the 1860's, perforated paper was usually used for embroidered wall plaques, some of which can be found in flea markets and antique shops today. They were done with long stitches and were usually flowers and saying such as "Home Sweet Home," "Bless This House," or "Nearer My God To Thee." ![]() These wholesome and often religious sayings, and the fact that a cross fits very well into the perforated grid must have led to all the religious perforated paper designs.
