Since at least the 1850's, machines have made thick, card-weight paper that was perforated in a grid (shown in the left-hand photo above). It has usually been used as a "fabric" by embroiderers. But, for about 15 years, beginning in about 1870, women left out the thread and cut very delicate designs into the perforated paper itself. And Paper Lace was born. Paper lace transforms the simplest of materials into the most intricate of designs. Paper lace has its own place in the world of handicrafts. Though it is not embroidery, stitchers will recognize the paper. Like counted cross stitch or charted needlepoint, paper lace is worked from a chart onto a blank "canvas." Though it is not traditional papercutting, papercutters will be very familiar with the blades and cutting techniques. As in papercutting, you cut out small shapes, and what is left behind becomes the art. Though it is not lace, lacemakers will recognize the interplay of dainty lines and carefully placed holes.
